Linda Perry Reveals All in New Documentary

6/18/2024

Linda Perry has certainly had a storied career as well as an extra-ordinary personal life. The 59 year old lesbian singer/ songwriter/producer has been through a great deal both on & off stage throughout the years. Born in Springfield Massachusetts, Perry’s mother was Brazilian while her father was of Portuguese descent. Perry initially became known to music lovers in 1989 as a member of 4 Non Blondes. In 1992 the rock band released their only album Bigger, Better, Faster, More! & rose to fame with the huge hit “What’s Up”. Not long afterward, however, in 1994 Perry struck out on her own solo career.

Perry dated actress Clementine Ford (The L Word) before marrying Roseanne star Sara Gilbert in 2014. The couple, who share son Rhodes (9), split in 2019. In an article from PEOPLE Perry spoke about her “best friend” relationship with her ex saying, ““We’re never not going to be a family. There doesn’t feel like much of a separation because we’re always together.” (https://ca.news.yahoo.com/linda-perry-sara-gilbert-avoided-194500163.html)

This month Perry’s documentary Linda Perry: Let it Die Here opened as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. Directed by Don Hardy the film features appearances from Gilbert as well as fellow musicians Brandi Carlile, Dolly Parton, & Christina Aguilera.

Recently Perry has spent her time producing tunes for Dolly Parton & Kate Hudson, organizing an EqualizeHer event at South by Southwest, as well as taking care of her mother (now deceased). A review on thewrap.com notes that Perry, ” spends most of Let It Die Here beating herself up for beating herself up. She knows damn well she’s talented, but she also knows damn well that she’s reserved most of that talent for other people.” (https://www.thewrap.com/linda-perry-let-it-die-here-documentary-review/)

The film review notes that the musician, “describes her workaholic schedule as a cycle of self-abuse. The overwhelming stress & anxiety doesn’t help her pursue her goals, it tortures her because she thinks she deserves to suffer.”

The themes of abuse & self harm run rampant throughout Let it Die Here as Perry speaks about enduring childhood abuse, trying to kill herself, & taking crystal meth. In 2021 Perry was diagnosed with breast cancer & underwent a double mastectomy.

Linda Perry: Let it Die Here premiered at Tribeca on June 6/2024.
